About

Thoughout the Cold War (and beyond?), scientists from the Ministry of Defence Chemical and Biological Warfare research facility at Porton Down, Wiltshire, conducted  numerous experiments in populated areas of the UK.  These experiments, known as field trials, were conducted in utmost secrecy and  involved the widespread dissemination of live bacteria or hazardous chemical compounds. The following pages look at some of Porton’s public area field trials in more detail. All information has been declassified and is in the public domain – much has been obtained in response to Freedom Of Information requests.
